do you like canada? i like canada...

My new obsession is Canadian, courtesy of my cyber-friend Tualla. Tualla despises The Decemberists. And reverb. But she's OK, honestly. She's Canadian.

Allow me to introduce you to a band called Ox. They fucking rule. I have been listening to their recent album American Lo-Fi quite a lot lately. It's addictive. It's... well, Ox's website describes it the best:

"Dope-soaked, derelict and wired, American Lo-Fi features 11 songs that give a nod to Velvet Underground and Bruce Springsteen, trading New Jersey urban fairground for Pacific interstate moonscape. Ox's long awaited follow-up to the seminal alt-country/indie hybrid classic Dust Bowl Revival, fuses weary with vicious, punk with hillbilly, the farmer-in-the-city with the electro-magnetic aura of tape hiss and amp crackle. American Lo Fi was recorded in the manic confines of Vancouver's Profile Studios (a.k.a. Upstairs Sound Laboratory) amid a plume of smoke, sweat and heavy Pacific-laced air."
Check it out if you can. Perhaps my favorite track is a killer cover of Cheap Trick's Surrender. Really I wanted to use "wicked bad" as an adjective right there, but I didn't want to sound like a doofus. Oops.

born in the usa
raised at the pineview mall, sacramento, california
it's so far away man.

she's got dirt underneath her nails
from scratching out the salt of the doritos bags,
on her knees and her hands every day.
she's a cocaine sucker.

the girl is down and out she's a 747 away from the usa
she's down and out and come down,
to going down.

she's on her own now
she's out in the cold now,
on crack cocaine,
ain't no big jet plane to carry her away,
she's gone to stay now.

the girl is down and out she's a 747 away from the usa
she's down and out and come down,
to going down.

she's down and out...
