well, i'm back

I know I haven't posted a heck of a lot lately, but it has been a trying couple of weeks in Mystik Spiral land. Two weeks ago my dad was in the hospital for 4 days (related to the lymphoma he was diagnosed with a couple of years ago). Additionally, work has been insanely busy, and I've been madly trying to get ready for the Cancun trip while fighting a cold that I caught from my nieces last week. The last straw, however, was when my computer crashed last Tuesday. Talk about devastating. Long story short, I was a victim of spyware, and luckily the computer geeks at Circuit City were able to repair my laptop without losing anything from my hard drive. It was a bit sketchy - apparently my tech guy had a bet going with another tech guy on whether or not he'd be able to fix it. Thankfully MY tech guy won. Oh yeah. Thank you David at Circuit City.

So, my first show in nearly two weeks was The Decemberists at the Fillmore. God, I hate the Fillmore; I think I hate it a little more every time I go. At this point, it takes a band that I really really really want to see to get me to go there. As it is, I love The Decemberists just as much as I hate the Fillmore, so it worked out. Plus, I had to find out if Colin was going to follow through on his promise of "something special" after a sickness-shortened show last November. We kicked off the evening with BBQ and brews at Leah & Laura's. Awesome. I am so glad it's spring. Leah threw out all the hamburger buns though, and I had to eat my garden burger on a hot dog bun. We improvise well. It was gooooood. (PS - the Sporting Life picture over there is for Leah - since Colin didn't play it tonight... :) Plus it's one of my favorite Decemberists pics ever...)

We got to the Fillmore at about 10 past 8 and My Brightest Diamond had already started (very much on time!). They only played 'til 8:30 so it was a short set for us. They put on a good live show - Shara only had 2 other band members with her, but they were all very animated and energetic. I'm sad I missed the first part of the set. Oh - and it was Shara's birthday!

Then at some point during the set break, 4 of the most annoying girls on the planet decided to stand right behind us. As soon as The Decemberists took the stage they alternated between talking loudly at each other and singing loudly AND horribly right in my ear. Awesome. Who wants to hear Colin sing when you can have the most dreadful off-key, top of your lungs singing woman right next to you? Oh yeah, me, that's who. I noticed a pattern - for all the songs from The Crane Wife they would alternate between talking and "singing" but for any older song they just talked. Fucking n00bs. The kicker though (which was the moment we finally decided to move) was when Shankill Butchers began and one of them exclaimed "I love this song!" and then proceeded to talk to her friends again. People, seriously... singing loudly and out of tune is meant for your car and your shower. And if you want to talk, talk between sets. Or don't come to the show.

Although my view suffered a bit, moving away from the yakky bitches still vastly increased my enjoyment of the show. I could actually hear Colin sing. It was fabulous. Early on, Colin proved that he remembered the November debacle and promised they'd play right up to curfew (11:00 on a Sunday; they took the stage at about 9:00). There were plenty of antics - from a "la dee dah" contest during 16 Military Wives, to a dance contest during The Perfect Crime to (of course) the audience participation in Sons And Daughters - where, I might add, Colin told us that we are the most pitch perfect crowd they've ever played for. Awwww.

For the encore, Colin played a couple songs solo - and asked for requests. If I was closer and/or possessed a booming voice, I would have asked for Apology Song... :) The first request was for Mariner's Revenge.... though it would have been interesting to see him try, I'm not too sure Colin can manage that one by himself. But he promised to play it with the rest of the band (w00t!). The next request (much more appropriate) was for Joanna Newsom's Bridges And Balloons. Lovely. Then on to Red Right Ankle, where Jenny joined Colin (on the organ) for a short time. Lastly was indeed The Mariner's Revenge Song, complete with theatrical whale and lots of dancing. We didn't get a lot of practice in being swallowed by that whale, because it was close to curfew and they were afraid of getting "unplugged". Haha. Needless to say, Colin managed to keep his "special" promise in the last three songs alone... It was an amazing show. They actually ended up playing until about 5 past eleven, due to John's impromptu rendition of what I think was Michael Jackson's Rock With You, while Nate and Chris did some crowd surfing. We think they were actually trying to play until they were unplugged, but the Fillmore was cool. For once. The complete setlist goes like this:

The Crane Wife 1 & 2
The Crane Wife 3
The Island: Come & See/Landlord's Daughter/You'll Not Feel...
The Infanta
July, July!
"Happy Birthday Shara"
Yankee Bayonet (I Will Be Home Then)^
Shankill Butchers
The Engine Driver
On The Bus Mall
O Valencia!
16 Military Wives
The Perfect Crime 2
Sons And Daughters
-----
Bridges & Balloons*
Red Right Ankle*
The Mariner's Revenge Song

^with Shara Worden
*Colin solo
So good. I fell in love with The Crane Wife all over again tonight. I haven't listened to that album - really not too much Decemberists, period - for a couple of months. Listening to it now though, and realizing again how fucking amazing it is. Aaaaaaah.

update for the holidays

Well, despite being snowed in for two days, I haven't managed to update my blog for a while. So, here's what's been happening:

Yes, Colorado had a HUGE blizzard this week, wreaking havoc on anyone having to travel for the holidays. Unfortunately I don't have a digital camera (maybe for christmas!!) so here are a couple images that I stole from my sister:

I do have the ablility to work from home, so I've kept busy and the cabin fever didn't set in too bad. My poor little Saturn is still pretty buried, but I don't have to drive myself anywhere until Sunday, so I'm hoping for some major meltage.

Living in a condo complex can get pretty humourous when there's a blizzard. Nobody owns a snow shovel... we have people to move our snow for us, thank you very much. Which means that on the rare occasion that we do have to shovel our cars out from under a 4-foot drift, we are forced to use whatever may be at hand. Bowls are popular. I used a big one to dig my car out of the 2003 spring blizzard. I even saw someone using a cafeteria tray...

This week, though... someone appeared in the parking lot with a real, true, honest-to-goodness snow shovel. He dug his car out to an audience of about half a dozen other residents. I figure they were waiting to pounce on him the second he was finished. I watched all of this from my living room of course. Shovel snow? Ha! Good thing I waited too, because a bulldozer showed up at 10:30 last night and cleared out the parking lot, nearly freeing my little Saturn, even. Who plows at 10:30 at night, you may wonder? The city of Westminster, that's who.

In music news, Stephen Colbert won his shred-a-thon over The Decemberists' Chris Funk in the Rock n' Awe Countdown To Guitarmegeddon. Of course, he had to cheat to do so... by "cutting" his hand on Rick Nielsen's 5-necked guitar and having guitar legend Peter Frampton sit in for him. Oh, he also bribed the judges. For shame, Stephen, for shame. We all know that Chris totally outshredded your right-wing ass.

On a more personal front - with the exception of KOSI 101's Continuous Christmas Music for the few hours I was in the office today, I've listened to nothing but The Decemberists for the past 26 hours. Why? I don't really know. I feel like it doesn't have anything to do with Guitarmageddon (although look at Chris flashing the devil horns in front of that green screen, oh yeah), I've just been in that kind of mood. Albums, EPs, live shows... I'll quite possibly burn out soon. But probably not... I'm not sure that I could ever suffer from Colin Meloy burnout... :)

I should move on from The Decemberists, though, especially now that I've had all sorts of 2006 album suggestions from all the "best of" lists floating around out there. It's amazing how much music is released in a year... Here are some lists from friends, acquaintances, music sites, what have you:

The Line Of Best Fit
Cambridge Sucks In The Summer
More Cowbell
Pitchfork Media
Muzzle Of Bees
NME
Amazon.com

But first, I think, in an attempt to get into that holiday spirit... (yes, I managed to break away from those pesky Decemberists while I've been typing):

COME ON! LET'S BOOGEY TO THE ELF DANCE!

Tie up your boots! Jump off the ladder!
Pack up your clothes! Nothing's the matter!
Mistletoe hangs up in the bedroom!
Your sister's bangs, she cut them herself!
Santa is here! Sleighbells are ringing!
Twenty-one elves! They are all singing!
K-Mart is closed! So is the bakery!
Everyone's home watching TV!
Santa Claus is coming!
Hear the banjo strumming!
Santa Claus is coming!
Hear the banjo strumming!

Chestnuts and fire, holly and hay!
Jesus and Mary! What a great day!
Evergreen tree covered in snow!
Tower of Babel! Tower of gold!
There's Aunt Marie and Uncle Bob!
They give us good gifts,
Like mittens and socks!
Hijack a snow plow! Clear out the streets!
Tell all the neighbors there's cookies to eat!

Get up off the floor and give a shout!
There's a lot to shout about!
Santa Claus is coming to town!
He's got the greatest gifts around!
[Away in a manger]
Santa Claus is coming!
Hear the banjo strumming!
Santa Claus is coming!
Hear the banjo strumming!

the colbert green screen counter-counter-challenge

If you're a fan of either Stephen Colbert or The Decemberists (or both, as I am), then you are quite aware of the, err..., "feud" over green screens and copyright infringement. Well, Colbert not only accepted The Decemberists counter-challenge, but proclaimed: "Decemberists, you walked right into my trap". Yes, it seems that the bespectacled right-wing pundit was once axe-man for Stephen & The Colberts. The man's talents know no bounds...

The Guitar Solo Challenge will come about on the Colbert Report on December 20. In a particularly amicable move, Colbert stated that he's even giving The Decemberists home field advantage by having the contest in December. What a great guy.

july, july! (the sequel)

Well, 2007 certainly is shaping up nicely. In the aftermath of The Decemberists' Stephen Colbert Counter-Challenge, their ex-label, Kill Rock Stars, will be releasing the band's first DVD on March 20.

The Decemberists: A Practical Handbook will contain an entire Decemberists show filmed at the Roseland Theater in Portland last November, as well as several extras (including the brilliant 16 Military Wives video). Pitchfork reports the setlist:

01 The Infanta
02 The Soldiering Life
03 Leslie Anne Levine
04 We Both Go Down Together
05 The Engine Driver
06 Eli the Barrow Boy
07 The Sporting Life
08 July, July!
09 16 Military Wives
10 The Mariner's Revenge Song
11 The Chimbley Sweep
12 I Was Meant for the Stage

july, july!

Caught The Decemberists in Denver tonight. It was my first live Decemberists experience; I was so excited for the show, it really couldn't come soon enough. I spent yesterday listening to the Decemberists catalogue in reverse chronological order. Obsessed? Yeah, just a bit... :)

The opener was a Scottish guy by the name of Alasdair Roberts. I only caught the last few songs, but he was good. The sound was too low, and it was difficult to hear him though... I can't remember the last time that was an issue! The crowd was pretty good for his set, people paid attention for the most part.

Leah and Laura were at the show, but our seats weren't together. Luckily, I sat next to a couple, Melissa and Michael, who said they'd be my friends for the evening... :) They drove down from Fort Collins for the show, and Melissa told me that the only reason Michael was there was because she made him go. Awesome. So we chatted during the break, which was surprisingly short.

The Decemberists came on stage at 9:00. Hey, I actually have a setlist! Ha ha, OK, so I used my phone to take some notes, but I have a setlist, dammit.

The Crane Wife 3
Colin - "I have a severe head cold, and the altitude isn't helping. But I'm going to do the best that I can." :(
July, July! w00t!!!!

We Both Go Down Together
The Engine Driver

Colin - "If this becomes too much of a travesty let me know..."
The Perfect Crime 2
Yankee Bayonet
The Crane Wife 1 & 2

Colin - "What it means when this happens is that we owe you. The next time we come to town we'll do something extra special... As soon as they build a venue a mile under the surface so we can play at sea level and our colds don't turn into the krakon being released." (ummm, am I going to be at the next Decemberists show in Denver? Fuck yeah I am!)
O Valencia!

Colin apologizes and thanks us for being understanding. One more song is all that he thinks he can "croak through". Awww...
Sons And Daughters

The crowd continued to applaud, even though I'm sure we all knew in our hearts that nobody was going to come back out on stage. The house lights came up after a minute or so, and everyone started filing out of the theater. Melissa told me that she thought the reason they didn't come back for one more was because Michael didn't clap. Funny, I thought it had something to do with Colin losing his voice, but I'd rather blame Michael... lol.

So. The show clocked in at just under an hour. It seems like I should be disappointed, but I'm really not. July, July! made my night, and despite Colin being sick it was a great show. His voice started giving out during the third song, but I see the cracking and croaking as part of the whole live show experience. By the time he apologized before the last song he could barely even speak. I'm amazed that he could still sing.

Now I'm listening to The Crane Wife. Again. This is such a great album. If you want an indescribable aural experience, go listen to The Crane Wife 3 through your headphones. No, not those damned iPod ear buds... the good headphones.

Get well soon, Colin.

And under the boughs unbowed
All clothed in the snowy shroud
She had no heart so hardened
All under the boughs unbowed

Each feather it fell from skin
'Til threadbare while she grew thin
How were my eyes so blinded?
Each feather it fell from skin

And I will hang my head, hang my head low
And I will hang my head, hang my head low

A grey sky, a bitter sting
A rain cloud, a crane on wing
All out beyond horizon
A grey sky, a bitter sting

And I will hang my head, hang my head low
And I will hang my head, hang my head low
