brilliant albums for brilliant people #8

So, it's not like this one is up there in contention for album of the year or anything, but I've barely heard a peep about these guys, and their debut album is really quite good. So in an attempt to bring a bit of attention to a very under-appreciated band, The Gaslight Anthem is the next installment of "brilliant albums". They are a band who wears their influences on their sleeves for sure... think something like Bruce Springsteen going a bit punk. Throw in some Lucero and some Billy Bragg doing Woody Guthrie on Mermaid Avenue and you have an idea what The Gaslight Anthem is about. Good stuff, I urge you to check them out.

And they're playing the Marquis Theater on October 13. Of course, that has to be the same night that White Rabbits are playing the Larimer, but if there's a chance for me to catch both sets... (haha, incidentally Lucero is at the Fox Theatre on the very same night - too many choices!!!).

o-v-e-r-l-o-a-d

Overload! Wooooooooo!

OK, I'm giddy. I just got back from seeing The National and St. Vincent at the Ogden, capping off an amazing 8 days of live shows:

In the last 8 days, I have seen at least a partial set from the following bands/artists:

The Arcade Fire, Art Brut, Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Broken West, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Cloud Cult, Damien Jurado, David Dondero, The Decemberists, Editors, Everything Absent Or Distorted, The Flaming Lips, Hot IQs, Johnathan Rice, Kings Of Leon, LCD Soundsystem, Matt & Kim (x2), Nathan & Stephen, The National, Okkervil River, Ra Ra Riot, Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band, Spoon, Rilo Kiley, St. Vincent, William Elliott Whitmore, YACHT.

27 artists. 8 days. And to put things a bit into perspective - of those 27 artists, 3 are my most favorite local bands (2 old, 1 new), and 11 have released albums this year that are candidates for my "best of" list. In 8 days. Oh, that doesn't even include White Rabbits, who played Monolith... they are also a candidate for a best of 2007 album, and I did catch their soundcheck, but since I'm seeing them at the Larimer Lounge next month I passed on them to check out William Whitmore.

Am I exhausted? Yes. Am I overwhelmed? Yes. Am I in a state of mental and emotional bliss? Hell yes. I'm really hoping to get some write-ups done in the next few days, so keep an eye on The Line Of Best Fit and/or MusicRex if you care to live vicariously through me and my good fortune.

It seems like every day of 2007 is bringing more and more amazing music... Not only album releases but also live shows. Viva Denver!

A few more pics of The National. Sooooooo fucking good:

oh my

I'm going to see Okkervil River tonight!

Just excited is all... ;)

boh heavy

OK, so there's been a lot of talk about Band Of Horses here lately... but Ben Bridwell seems to be attracting a lot of attention these days. And sadly not in a good way.

via Pitchfork (there are lots of links in the article on their site if you're not hip to the latest BoH goings-on):

Call Band of Horses what you will: totally awesome, meanies, sellouts... Wait, sellouts? When did this happen? Do we have a link for that?

Er, yeah, unfortunately. Seems the Band has licensed a song apiece to a forthcoming Ford commercial and a really tacky Wal-Mart website-- the latter of which suggests some link between cheap warez and existential satisfaction.

Though the marriage of cool tunes and uncool companies is hardly news, any whiff of indie rockers making nice with corporate interests tends to raise a bit of stink among purists. So we asked Band of Horses main man Ben Bridwell if he'd like to comment on the thinking behind the band's decision to lend their music to Wal-Mart and Ford.

He responded with the following statement,

"Dear friends,

"As you may have heard, there's been some recent discussion of a couple of licenses for BoH songs. Just to provide some clarification...

"I did allow Wal-Mart to use a song for a new website they created and have also given permission to Ford Motor Company to license a song from our new album. Because some people see Wal-Mart as a huge, evil corporation, they seem to be especially bummed about this license and see us as posers and/or corporate whores as a result.

"I'd like to just state for the record that we let all kinds of folks use our songs in all kinds of mediums - TV, films, school projects, etc... My personal stance is that once that music is recorded and released to the world then I don't really care where it goes. "The Funeral" has been licensed to death (ha, wretch) at this point and if somebody wants to throw down some duckets for it, then feel free. It also beats the hell out of stealing batteries from Wal-Mart to sell them back for 8 bucks.

"As for Ford: I drive a 1986 F-150 that still runs great. Maybe I'll get the a/c fixed with the cash they kicked down. I'm also stoked that people will hear our song on TV and we might pick up some new listeners in the process. I see no negative.

"That's our reasoning and I'm okay with it. I hope fans of the band are, too.

"We promise to use the money to buy camcorders (at Wal-Mart) for people to film "The Funeral," so I can get mad and crap my diaper. Fuck it.

-bb"

Dub these Horses sellouts if you wanna (we report, you decide, etc.): Just don't call 'em slackers. Having wrapped a short run of late summer dates last night in Portland, the band has just announced their fall plans, which include a stampede throughout North America in October and November. Hey, kinda like how they made that one album, then cranked out another one real quick-like!

And about that album they cranked out: it's pretty good! You can find it at stores much less depressing than Wal-Mart October 9, thanks to Sub Pop. Preordering the disc directly from Band of Horses' site will not only get you a fine rock'n'roll record, but a handsome Band of Horses beer koozie to boot!

Also in the works of the Band: hanging with friends and going to the record store.

Seriously, no Colorado? WTF? That Bozeman show looks tasty... If they don't add more shows and if I can get someone to drive with me I might actually consider that.

As for selling out... hey, I'm all for bands I love making some money. That Band Of Horses is getting money from Wal-Mart... well, that is a little sad, but whatever. Besides...

"We promise to use the money to buy camcorders (at Wal-Mart) for people to film "The Funeral," so I can get mad and crap my diaper. Fuck it.
That there is funny shit. Rock on, Ben, rock on.

brilliant albums for brilliant people #6

It finally leaked last week, hooray! I'm still not sure how it will compare with last year's Everything All The Time (my #1 of 2006), but what is clear is that I am completely in love with Band Of Horses. Despite the move from Seattle to South Carolina and all the lineup changes, BoH have done it again: Cease To Begin is another collection of pretty songs from Ben Bridwell & co. The reverb is toned down some, the atmosphere is a bit sunnier, but the end result is still lovely. If you know what's good for you, you'll pre-order this one now. Do it.

brilliant albums for brilliant people #5

I fell in love with this album the first time I heard it. David Dondero has been likened to Jack Kerouac and described as a troubador, minstrel and bard. All comparisons are certainly apt of this guy's poetic, folky music. He sounds a lot like Conor Oberst... or rather Conor sounds a lot like him, as Dave has been making music since Conor was barely a teenager. In fact, Conor has been a fan of Dave's for years, and both Simple Love and Dave's last album South Of The South were released through Oberst's Team Love label. For as long as this guy's been around and for as good as his music is, he should have more recognition than he does. Don't miss this one!

For you Denver/Boulder-ites, Dave is playing the Boulder Theatre next Wednesday (9/12) in support of Against Me! & Matt & Kim. An interesting combination, but worth checking out.

mullets & ymsb

An odd combination for sure. But when I picked Kate up for the Yonder Mountain String Band show at Red Rocks yesterday, she gave me this mullet picture to thank me for driving:

I'm pretty sure this is the best "thank you for driving" gift that I've ever received. We tried to think of a name for him, but the only suggestion was Sebastian (from Leah). But we also think he looks like a werewolf and Sebastian doesn't seem to be much of a werewolf name. Whatever his name ends up being, he's my new car mascot. As if mullet man wasn't enough, this guy's picture is on the other side:

At first glance, he doesn't seem to be quite as creepy as the mullet guy, but just look at the way his beard doesn't connect to his sideburns. That's weird. And don't count out that serial killer look emanating from his eyes and smile...

Anyway - Yonder Mountain String Band at Red Rocks was bluegrass-tastic. Full review at MusicRex. I took two pictures when we arrived - one of each end of a beautiful rainbow - then I seemed to have forgotten that I had my camera...

ben kweller/apples in stereo photos

For a full review of last night's Ben Kweller show at Boulder's Club 156, visit Musicrex. Here are the photos I took:

Opener Willy Mason:

The setlist:

BK was having a bad hair day - he complained about his bangs being too long. I don't know, it looks pretty damn good to me:

Chris Morrissey on bass:

I don't think that shirt will live through one more washing:

Thirteen:

Mark Stepro on drums:

In Other Words:

BK's shirt is waaaay older than he is:

Penny On The Train Track:

And then, partly because I got outta Boulder by 10:30 and the Apples In Stereo show didn't start 'til 9:30 (with two openers) and partly because I hadn't been to a show in two and a half weeks and was going through withdrawal, I headed to the Bluebird for some Apples action. I'm such a rockstar.

Robert Schneider:

John Hill & Bill Doss, who has red hair and muttonchops and plays about seventeen different instruments. Awesome:

Spaceman John Ferguson & Eric Allen (I love his guitar strap):

More cowbell!!

the future of this blog

So, two very cool things happened here in Mystik Spiral land in August.

First, I was invited to join the staff of a wonderful UK-based music blog called The Line Of Best Fit. Talk about going big time. You can see my author archive by clicking here (some reviews have been posted on my blog as well...).

Second, I was propositioned to work on Musicrex - a site that we hope will become a great resource for local music. Bookmark it if you live in the Denver/Boulder area as we have lots of show info, news and reviews.

So, with two projects on the horizon that are much more interesting than my little blog, I will most likely stop posting reviews here. I do intend to keep up with tour news, weekly shows, and important band discoveries that I make along the way.
