full service, i like it.

Check out this press release from Austin's Full Service. It's an interesting idea, and I do indeed like it. Too bad 311 and Snoop Dogg aren't coming to Denver this summer...

Austin’s FULL SERVICE
TAKES OVER 311/Snoop Dogg Summer Tour

Austin’s band of road pirates FULL SERVICE has just announced it’s most far-reaching and risky stunt yet: a month long "TAKEOVER TOUR" spanning the entire eastern and south central United States. The target – 311 & Snoop Dogg’s summer tour.

Having successfully toured the nation’s club circuit independently for much of the last three years, FULL SERVICE has decided to take touring and promotion to a new level.

Wait, so the band has been invited to tour with 311?

"Definitely not. We were not invited by any means," says drummer Hoagman. "This is parasitic infiltration at its best. Will it be our greatest Takeover of all time? All signs point to yes."

Armed to the hilt with a generator, a traveling crew of three dedicated street-teamers and existing fans in every city, 10,000 demo CD’s, and a commitment to go without sleep for a month, the band will play 'takeover concerts' outside of the arena venues, before the inside concert begins, at all fourteen stops along the 311 tour, beginning in Philadelphia July 15th and ending in Austin August 2, 2008. The band is also booking late-night club dates in the each city after almost every takeover.

Full Service has been in takeover training for several years now, having successfully executed missions ranging from college campuses at lunch time (UCLA, UC-Berkeley, FSU, for example) to the Austin City Limits Festival (see FOX News coverage). Their most successful takeover came in 2006 outside the Austin Music Hall at a 311 concert in Austin. Full Service set up directly in front of the venue, which was heavily patrolled by Police. After a full ten-song set with no hassle from the authorities (gotta love Austin cops), a large crowd was begging for sample CD’s and info about the band.

Amidst the ever more competitive environment for bands to gain attention, FULL SERVICE has forsworn the standardized and impersonal myspace "friend-requesting" campaign and has instead decided to take it straight to the people, LOUD and LIVE and definitely UN-INVITED!

Visit http://www.fullservicemusic.com/ or http://www.blogger.com/www.myspace.com/fullservice for music, videos, and info.

TAKEOVER DATES
7/15 Tues – Penns Landing (Philadelphia, PA)
7/16 Wed Keyspan Park (Brooklyn, NY)
7/18 Fri – Tweeter Center (Boston, MA)
7/19 Sat – PNC Bank Arts Center (Holmdel, NJ)
7/20 Sun – Nissan Pavillion (Washington, DC)
7/22 Tues - Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre (VIRGINIA BEACH, VA)
7/23 Wed - Walnut Creek Amphitheatre (Raleigh, NC)

7/26 Sat - Hi-Fi Buys Amphitheatre (Atlanta, GA)
7/27 Sun - Ford Amphitheatre (TAMPA, FL)

7/30 Wed - Showgrounds at Sam Houston Race Park (HOUSTON, TX)
7/31 Thur – Smirnoff Amphitheatre (Dallas, TX)
8/2 Sat – The Backyard (Austin, TX)

You should certainly check out their MySpace page for some tunes. They rather aptly describe their sound as Rock/Reggae/Metal. There's a little hip-hop in there too. It's good. Real good.

So I got really excited this morning when I got a MySpace bulletin proclaiming an Eels tour in 2008, only to click over to the Eels home page and discover all confirmed dates are in Europe. Damn. But there is a promise that more dates are coming soon, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

It's been waaaaaay to long since I've had live Eels...

boh heavy

OK, so there's been a lot of talk about Band Of Horses here lately... but Ben Bridwell seems to be attracting a lot of attention these days. And sadly not in a good way.

via Pitchfork (there are lots of links in the article on their site if you're not hip to the latest BoH goings-on):

Call Band of Horses what you will: totally awesome, meanies, sellouts... Wait, sellouts? When did this happen? Do we have a link for that?

Er, yeah, unfortunately. Seems the Band has licensed a song apiece to a forthcoming Ford commercial and a really tacky Wal-Mart website-- the latter of which suggests some link between cheap warez and existential satisfaction.

Though the marriage of cool tunes and uncool companies is hardly news, any whiff of indie rockers making nice with corporate interests tends to raise a bit of stink among purists. So we asked Band of Horses main man Ben Bridwell if he'd like to comment on the thinking behind the band's decision to lend their music to Wal-Mart and Ford.

He responded with the following statement,

"Dear friends,

"As you may have heard, there's been some recent discussion of a couple of licenses for BoH songs. Just to provide some clarification...

"I did allow Wal-Mart to use a song for a new website they created and have also given permission to Ford Motor Company to license a song from our new album. Because some people see Wal-Mart as a huge, evil corporation, they seem to be especially bummed about this license and see us as posers and/or corporate whores as a result.

"I'd like to just state for the record that we let all kinds of folks use our songs in all kinds of mediums - TV, films, school projects, etc... My personal stance is that once that music is recorded and released to the world then I don't really care where it goes. "The Funeral" has been licensed to death (ha, wretch) at this point and if somebody wants to throw down some duckets for it, then feel free. It also beats the hell out of stealing batteries from Wal-Mart to sell them back for 8 bucks.

"As for Ford: I drive a 1986 F-150 that still runs great. Maybe I'll get the a/c fixed with the cash they kicked down. I'm also stoked that people will hear our song on TV and we might pick up some new listeners in the process. I see no negative.

"That's our reasoning and I'm okay with it. I hope fans of the band are, too.

"We promise to use the money to buy camcorders (at Wal-Mart) for people to film "The Funeral," so I can get mad and crap my diaper. Fuck it.

-bb"

Dub these Horses sellouts if you wanna (we report, you decide, etc.): Just don't call 'em slackers. Having wrapped a short run of late summer dates last night in Portland, the band has just announced their fall plans, which include a stampede throughout North America in October and November. Hey, kinda like how they made that one album, then cranked out another one real quick-like!

And about that album they cranked out: it's pretty good! You can find it at stores much less depressing than Wal-Mart October 9, thanks to Sub Pop. Preordering the disc directly from Band of Horses' site will not only get you a fine rock'n'roll record, but a handsome Band of Horses beer koozie to boot!

Also in the works of the Band: hanging with friends and going to the record store.

Seriously, no Colorado? WTF? That Bozeman show looks tasty... If they don't add more shows and if I can get someone to drive with me I might actually consider that.

As for selling out... hey, I'm all for bands I love making some money. That Band Of Horses is getting money from Wal-Mart... well, that is a little sad, but whatever. Besides...

"We promise to use the money to buy camcorders (at Wal-Mart) for people to film "The Funeral," so I can get mad and crap my diaper. Fuck it.
That there is funny shit. Rock on, Ben, rock on.

voxtrot postpones several dates...

... including my birthday show at the Bluebird. Boo. From Voxtrot's MySpace:

Oh, it's crazy times here at Voxtrot HQ! We were just getting ready for a couple of weeks back home, when the Arctic Monkeys rang up to see if we'd join them on their US tour. We said yes, of course. How could we pass that up? Unfortunately, as a result, it means that we're cancelling the rest of our European dates as well as the US west coast. Most of the cancelled dates will be rescheduled before the end of the year... we'll keep you in the loop.

The UK single for "Firecracker" just got pushed back a week and will now be released on September 3rd. The a-side is a slightly reworked version of the track, while the b-side is called "Honey Bee", and was pulled from the LP sessions. It will be available on CD and 7-inch formats. If you pick it up via iTunes, you recieve a third song as well, called "Loan Shark". Two of the three songs can now be streamed on our Myspace page.

We stopped by MTVu to film a Backstage Pass segment, which was pretty fun! You can see the results HERE.

We also played Siren Festival later that week, played skeeball with Lavender Diamond for Spinner.com, and sat down for a chat with Filter TV.

For those of you who don't know about the new record yet, we're happy to fill you in. Our first full-length record is finally in stores worldwide! We recorded it with the amazing Victor Van Vugt (PJ Harvey, Nick Cave, Luna) in Austin and NYC. The record is 11 tracks long, eponymously titled Voxtrot, and can be found via Playlouder/Beggars Group just about everywhere. We also want to point out that if you purchase the vinyl LP, you receive a coupon for a free digital/MP3 copy of the record. If you pick it up through iTunes, you get two bonus songs, "New Love" and "Loan Shark" as an iTunes Exclusive.

All eight Reaching For The Lasers "making of the record" mini-documentary episodes are now up! If you haven't seen them yet, you can find them at http://www.reaching4lasers.com/. There are also clips of the new record, and free desktop wallpaper and AIM icon downloads.
