spoon artwork

I think I like it, although I still can't get past the title. Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is out on July 10 (Merge).

andrew bird, success!

When I was just a little boy
I threw away all of my action toys
I became obsessed with operation, oh

Hearts and minds and certain glands
You got to learn to keep a steady hand
And thus began my morbid fascination

After my previous 2 attempts to see Andrew Bird were thwarted (one sold out show and one blizzard/parking disaster) I was a bit worried that I would encounter a new catastrophe tonight. It would seem, however, that the third time really is a charm.

I love that picture... ->
I was very excited when I found out that Apostle Of Hustle was opening the show. I have really been enjoying their new album National Anthem Of Nowhere. I missed the beginning of their set, despite the fact that I walked into the Fox at precisely 9:02 and the show was supposed to start at 9:00. If nothing else, this week has been rife with shows starting on time. Apostle Of Hustle were absolutely fabulous - tight, charming and funny. I haven't been so taken by an opening act since Malajube and then The Besnard Lakes. O Canada, you've done it again. Not that AoH blew Andrew Bird away or anything, but they were nearly as enjoyable as Andrew himself.

Andrew Bird. Finally, Andrew Bird. The man is insanely talented. Setting aside the violin, the guitar, the glockenspiel, the songwriting and the voice... NO human being should be able to whistle that well. C'mon. He played for nearly two hours to a visibly captivated crowd. I've never heard the Fox Theatre so quiet in my entire life. Especially a sold out Fox Theatre. Partly it was just a good crowd - even though the theatre was at least 2/3 full for the Apostle Of Hustle set, you could hear a pin drop while they played too. The singer even commented on how quiet we were, to which the guy behind me responded "that's because you're so good!". True, true.

Anyhoo, the only disappointment of the evening was the near lack of anything from The Mysterious Production Of Eggs. By my count, it took Andrew 6 tries to successfully start Skin Is, My. Apparently they've been playing it almost every night for the past month and the dry skin at the end of his finger was catching on the violin strings. Gross. And he played Tables And Chairs, which is my absolute favorite song of his. I do like how he mixes things up for his live shows, rather than regurgitating what he's already put out on his albums. Though they are spectacular albums, you have to admit. I never thought it possible that he would be able to put out a better piece of work than The Mysterious Production Of Eggs... but Armchair Apocrypha is even more of a masterpiece (imho). I've listed to it at least 25 times and I find something else to fall in love with every time I hear it.

Good news: Andrew mentioned that he thinks he's playing E-Town in a couple of months. Sweet.

A setlist for you:

Fiery Crash
Spare-Ohs
Dear Dirty
Plasticities
Heretics
Simple X*
Armchairs
Skin Is, My
Scythian Empires
Dark Matter

*I think I can honestly say tonight was my first time to witness a See n' Say being utilized as an instrument...

patrick, say it ain't so

I was going to post this yesterday (well, Monday, at any rate) but my laziness got the best of me. As previously reported by the likes of Pitchfork and The Line Of Best Fit, Patrick Wolf is apparently throwing in the towel. But, Patrick... I've never seen you live... :(

From his official message board:

dear all... I should never have read this.. I really shouldn't.I dont think when I was 16 and dreamt of releasing records there would ever be so much crazy speculation about the person I am and that you want me to be.I have become so tired of this behaviour, sometimes I wake up and have to do six hoursof interviews before doing a show, then go straight to bed to sleep a couple of hours to fly to a new country to be cross examined in the same way.. I dont know what is left of me sometimes, some mornings i dont know how i get on the flight or even open my mouth to sing that night. If I choose after working since the early hours of a day and then pouring my heart out for an hour and a half that I really have nothing left to give.. that I cannot be a fake politician and sign autographs for an hour.. does this make an asshole?

because my drummer was causing arguments within my road family, taking sedative drugs before an important show in a city i really love, so much so he could not play the music I wrote, the songs that I have survived on in the last six years... because I had to slap him to see if he was even CONSCIOUS on stage.... the fact that the only thing that got any reaction out his corpse happened to be made of metal.. because all of this.. does this make me seem like I was on cocaine, or on some power trip? I was pissed off because this was just one more musician or businessman taking my good nature and generosity for a ride... trust me, that moment onstage was the end of a long line of bad behaviour that it would unfair to go into in public. Yes I was drunk, but It was one oclock in the morning after seven hours of interviews.. i had been running on about four hours of sleep a night for about two weeks... such is the joy of promoting a record.

Anyway, I was having FUN until that moment. So was the rest of my band until we realised my drummer was taking the piss out of all of us and our hard work. I dont work with liars and I dont work with thieves.

I dont want to have to share this information with you but so many seem so interested...

I have made a decision, my final concert will be this november, a retrospective with an orchestra in London. I am not sure wether there will be anymore public communications after that, Infact I am pretty sure there will be none. Of course, this has nothing to do with my drummer.. but a creative clock is ticking and I have many many projects to be creating with my time left on this earth. I hope to share my last shows with you this year.

I have enjoyed making and performing music for you all, I have enjoyed trying to give a little hope and inspiration to the world. But I feel, especially when I read all this and I go about my days that I have failed.Im not seeking sympathy or empathy, god, I have to go find something I love and am inspired by in this world again. Many of you will never know the amount of work and emotion that goes on behind the scenes for me and many of your other favourite artists or musicians and why should you? I wanted to give you disneyland.. I wanted to give you a world at the back of your wardrobe, now im just feel a fool for bothering. I am in berlin today, i know I should never have read this, I dont know who any of you are, just strangers talking amongst themselves, and I wish I was stronger minded today, but i have to take enough bullshit from other parts of the world for what I do and who I am without getting it from here.

Im going off for a walk now.. clear my heart and head. Thanks to all you with the intelligence to see past the superficial chaos of the media and the various ridiculous personalities and characters that have been painted around me over the years, the problem is, unfortunately many of you will never get to know the truth, but many will still speculate, and play chinese whispers with interviews and opinions from the friend of a friend. This is nothing new to me, unfortunately, luckily I have always had a close set of dear friends that will always know me for who I really am, just as I do.

If I can give any advice, is, if anything, just listen to the music, watch the videos, read the lyrics, see the artwork, these are my communications, not others.

still love x patrick

Waaaaaaaaait, didn't we hear the same thing from Ryan Adams a couple of years ago on his message board?!? Those crazy kids...

well, i'm back

I know I haven't posted a heck of a lot lately, but it has been a trying couple of weeks in Mystik Spiral land. Two weeks ago my dad was in the hospital for 4 days (related to the lymphoma he was diagnosed with a couple of years ago). Additionally, work has been insanely busy, and I've been madly trying to get ready for the Cancun trip while fighting a cold that I caught from my nieces last week. The last straw, however, was when my computer crashed last Tuesday. Talk about devastating. Long story short, I was a victim of spyware, and luckily the computer geeks at Circuit City were able to repair my laptop without losing anything from my hard drive. It was a bit sketchy - apparently my tech guy had a bet going with another tech guy on whether or not he'd be able to fix it. Thankfully MY tech guy won. Oh yeah. Thank you David at Circuit City.

So, my first show in nearly two weeks was The Decemberists at the Fillmore. God, I hate the Fillmore; I think I hate it a little more every time I go. At this point, it takes a band that I really really really want to see to get me to go there. As it is, I love The Decemberists just as much as I hate the Fillmore, so it worked out. Plus, I had to find out if Colin was going to follow through on his promise of "something special" after a sickness-shortened show last November. We kicked off the evening with BBQ and brews at Leah & Laura's. Awesome. I am so glad it's spring. Leah threw out all the hamburger buns though, and I had to eat my garden burger on a hot dog bun. We improvise well. It was gooooood. (PS - the Sporting Life picture over there is for Leah - since Colin didn't play it tonight... :) Plus it's one of my favorite Decemberists pics ever...)

We got to the Fillmore at about 10 past 8 and My Brightest Diamond had already started (very much on time!). They only played 'til 8:30 so it was a short set for us. They put on a good live show - Shara only had 2 other band members with her, but they were all very animated and energetic. I'm sad I missed the first part of the set. Oh - and it was Shara's birthday!

Then at some point during the set break, 4 of the most annoying girls on the planet decided to stand right behind us. As soon as The Decemberists took the stage they alternated between talking loudly at each other and singing loudly AND horribly right in my ear. Awesome. Who wants to hear Colin sing when you can have the most dreadful off-key, top of your lungs singing woman right next to you? Oh yeah, me, that's who. I noticed a pattern - for all the songs from The Crane Wife they would alternate between talking and "singing" but for any older song they just talked. Fucking n00bs. The kicker though (which was the moment we finally decided to move) was when Shankill Butchers began and one of them exclaimed "I love this song!" and then proceeded to talk to her friends again. People, seriously... singing loudly and out of tune is meant for your car and your shower. And if you want to talk, talk between sets. Or don't come to the show.

Although my view suffered a bit, moving away from the yakky bitches still vastly increased my enjoyment of the show. I could actually hear Colin sing. It was fabulous. Early on, Colin proved that he remembered the November debacle and promised they'd play right up to curfew (11:00 on a Sunday; they took the stage at about 9:00). There were plenty of antics - from a "la dee dah" contest during 16 Military Wives, to a dance contest during The Perfect Crime to (of course) the audience participation in Sons And Daughters - where, I might add, Colin told us that we are the most pitch perfect crowd they've ever played for. Awwww.

For the encore, Colin played a couple songs solo - and asked for requests. If I was closer and/or possessed a booming voice, I would have asked for Apology Song... :) The first request was for Mariner's Revenge.... though it would have been interesting to see him try, I'm not too sure Colin can manage that one by himself. But he promised to play it with the rest of the band (w00t!). The next request (much more appropriate) was for Joanna Newsom's Bridges And Balloons. Lovely. Then on to Red Right Ankle, where Jenny joined Colin (on the organ) for a short time. Lastly was indeed The Mariner's Revenge Song, complete with theatrical whale and lots of dancing. We didn't get a lot of practice in being swallowed by that whale, because it was close to curfew and they were afraid of getting "unplugged". Haha. Needless to say, Colin managed to keep his "special" promise in the last three songs alone... It was an amazing show. They actually ended up playing until about 5 past eleven, due to John's impromptu rendition of what I think was Michael Jackson's Rock With You, while Nate and Chris did some crowd surfing. We think they were actually trying to play until they were unplugged, but the Fillmore was cool. For once. The complete setlist goes like this:

The Crane Wife 1 & 2
The Crane Wife 3
The Island: Come & See/Landlord's Daughter/You'll Not Feel...
The Infanta
July, July!
"Happy Birthday Shara"
Yankee Bayonet (I Will Be Home Then)^
Shankill Butchers

O Valencia!
16 Military Wives
The Perfect Crime 2
Sons And Daughters
-----
Bridges & Balloons*
Red Right Ankle*
The Mariner's Revenge Song

^with Shara Worden
*Colin solo
So good. I fell in love with The Crane Wife all over again tonight. I haven't listened to that album - really not too much Decemberists, period - for a couple of months. Listening to it now though, and realizing again how fucking amazing it is. Aaaaaaah.

show burnout

I think I may be suffering from show burnout. I've been to an awful lot in the last couple of months and haven't felt like hitting any for the past week. I missed Parenthetical Girls last Friday and Sunset Rubdown/Xiu Xiu last night, mostly out of pure apathy. Shame on me.

Maybe I just need a vacation... good timing as I'm heading to Cancun in about a week and a half. :)

what, exactly, IS going on in kevin barnes' brain?

And do we really want to know? It only took me forever, but now that I am aware of their awesomeness, I really wish Of Montreal would come play in Denver. In the meantime, I'm going to have to amuse myself with tales of nakedness and with videos. Yes, I seem to be obsessed with videos lately. Here are two from Of Montreal - first, Heimdalsgate Like A Promethean Curse on Conan, then the music video. Both wonderful, amazing, and completely fucked up. Rock on Kevin Barnes.

pretty voice

Check it out - and if you live in the Denver area, go see Cloud Cult at the Larimer Lounge on May 10. If you don't live in the Denver area, see them wherever you can. :) And buy The Meaning Of 8. It's fucking beautiful.

I'm not a big video person, but I love The Shins, so I had to check out the new Australia video posted by Pitchfork today. Yes, I love The Shins...

something you should hear

The band is from Denmark and is called The Kissaway Trail. The album is also called The Kissaway Trail and was released in January in Denmark and will be released later this month in the UK, Europe, Australia and Scandinavia. Oh Kissaway Trail, do you think there's nobody in the US who loves your music? Please release your brilliant full-length debut over here. Please? Well, in the meantime, you can always stream the album at The Kissaway Trail's little Bella Union page (Bella Union is so fabulous).

This album is really very nice, brought to my attention by my friend Rich. Go ahead, give it a listen. If I had to describe them I'd have to say something like Cloud Cult meets Sigur Ros (it's all in english though). Really I hate comparing one band with another, but at the same time I'm not so adept at album reviews, so I do what I can. Maybe it will just suffice to say that this is a great indie pop/rock album that you should check out immediately.

never go to a rock show without a kazoo!

Never.

Well, after last night's VERY disappointing Man Man show (disappointing fans, not disappointing band... Man Man still fucking rules) tonight was certainly a treat: a polite Bluebird Theater crowd and an incredible trifecta of bands that I absolutely love.

Portland's Stars Of Track And Field kicked the evening off with an energetic set. They sounded good, but the vocals were mixed waaaaaay too low. The Long Winters' bassist (Eric Corson I now know) joined them on their last song. SOTAF will be back in a couple of weeks supporting Joseph Arthur, but sadly it's the day after I leave for Cancun. At last count this Mexico trip has me missing the afore-mentioned show, Bright Eyes, Junior Boys, The Books, Cornelius and Regina Spektor. It damn well better be worth it... :)

Next up was The Broken West (from L.A. - needless to say the West Coast was nicely represented tonight in Denver). I was really excited to see them; I love their recent release I Can't Go On, I'll Go On. The singer mentioned being in Denver only once before and that due to the altitude's effect on him it wasn't a very good show. Those crazy Californians... Right away I remembered exactly when they were in town - it was February 13 at the Hi-Dive and I was torn between seeing them or Glen Phillips at The Soiled Dove. As I recall it was snowing and I was a wuss that night and I ended up going nowhere... :( At any rate, they sounded great and they're coming back to Denver in May. Awesome.

Lastly, from Seattle, was The Long Winters. They. Were. Awesome. Stage presence, witty banter, great songs, they had it all for sure. John Roderick (whose name I had to look up, yes) is fucking hilarious. Some of my favorite banter:

-"I see a lot of the indie rock salute tonight." (That would be arms folded across one's chest). "I'll have none of that; no hands in pockets, no Blackberry... the only way I'll allow Blackberries is if you're reviewing the show as it happens." (Unfortunately the indie rock salute and having my hands in my pockets are my two favorite live show positions... I just don't know what to do with my hands!)
-"This is what happens when you say "fuck work" too many times... you join a band, wear the same shirt for a week and live off of cheese doodles and mountain dew."
-"I'm breaking out the brown guitar. You know what it means when I break out the brown guitar..."
(fan): "Purple Rain!"
(John) - "Yes, we play Purple Rain. Not just the song, but the entire album."
-"This Rush interlude brought to you by the comic book store down the street. For all your Dungeons and Dragons needs... "
-"The Long Winters don't do encores because of an edict from Homeland Security. We don't like it, but we can't really talk about it..."
And of course:
-"Never go to a rock show without a kazoo!"

There was more. Way more. But this is what happens when I don't take notes: I can't remember shit. They did do a 3-song encore, even though The Long Winters don't do encores (fuck homeland security! lol) ... two lovely acoustic numbers and one full band. And here we have a vague, pathetic semblance of a setlist. No order at all, and not nearly complete - they played for a good 90 minutes - but this is what I can remember:

Carparts
Shapes
Cinnamon
Stupid
The Commander Thinks Aloud
(It's A) Departure
Seven
Hindsight
Honest
Ultimatum
Pushover
Teaspoon
Sky Is Open
Rich Wife
It'll Be A Breeze
Mimi

Great show, great band. According to John they're near the end of the tour and are heading back to Seattle to make a new records. Awwww, yeah!

it's a great week for talk shows, if you're around

Tonight: Andrew Bird on Letterman
Wednesday: LCD Soundsystem on Letterman
Thursday: Of Montreal on Conan
Friday: The Shins on Leno

Watch 'em, fuckers. :)

icky thump, part 2

Well, we've got cover art and a date to go with the previously announced tracklist for the next White Stripes album, Icky Thump. The release date is June 18 and the cover art is:

For some reason it's ringing a bell that I heard/read that Jack & Meg were going to dump the whole red, white & black theme for this one. Apparently not. The previously reported tracklist goes something like this:

Icky Thump
You Don't Know What Love Is (You Just Do as You're Told)
300 MPH Torrential Outpour Blues
Conquest
Bone Broke
Prickly Thorn, But Sweetly Worn
St. Andrew (This Battle Is in the Air)
Little Cream Soda
Rag and Bone
I'm Slowly Turning Into You
A Martyr for My Love for You
Catch Hell Blues
Effect and Cause

the robot ate me!

Today while browsing Pitchfork news I discovered that The Robot Ate Me are touring. I'd never heard of this guy/band, and I admit to being intrigued by the name. I really like the tracks on their MySpace page as well. I think I may have to check this one out, which would mean missing the El-P show at the Bluebird... hmmmm...

let me tell you about my first - and last - night at club 156

I think I jinxed myself tonight in one or more of the following fashions:

I was so pumped after seeing Man Man at Larimer Lounge a couple of weeks ago, that I bought tonight's ticket as soon as I got home from the show. I'd never even heard of Club 156, but a after a quick web search I knew that it was in Boulder and held 150 people. Sounded damn, damn good to me for another Man Man show. The fact that Club 156 is actually inside the CU student center should have been a red flag to begin with, but sadly I didn't find out that bit of info until I was mapquesting directions this afternoon. But still I was really excited for the show.

Local band Mannequin Makeout opened the show. They were pretty good, very punky - kind of reminded me of an older and more mature Be Your Own PET. I was interested to see that the keyboardist was using the same gadget that I saw Mothership use when they opened for Dirty On Purpose a few weeks ago. I seriously have got to find out what this thing is. The best way I can describe it is it's a black box with an antenna. When someone passes their hand near the antenna, it emits some funky noise, that changes as the hand moves. It's a nifty little gadget, at any rate.

Mannequin Makeout played about a 40-minute set, and I thought Man Man might actually start almost on time. Ha. I'm guessing that they didn't have a soundcheck and/or the Club 156 sound guy sucks some serious ass, as it took them 45 minutes to get set up. That's compared to about 20 minutes at Larimer Lounge. It was difficult not to get impatient, but I knew once they started playing everything would be great. Ha.

Tonight was the closest I've ever come to getting into a fight. Well, maybe except for that one time in junior high where this bully girl accused me of stealing her quarter. But I don't think she was really serious. What was serious was how annoying the couple (and very tall friend) standing behind me tonight actually were. Long story short, they seemed to feel that, despite the fact that everyone in the first several rows were shoulder to shoulder, they should be able to use as much space as they wanted in which to dance. I have absolutely no problem with people having a good time at a show, but when I start getting pushed and stepped on, I tend to get a bit pissed off. After pushing the woman away several times, the very tall friend got right in front of me. In a tremendous group effort, Leah and I managed to push them back toward the center. :) The back and forth went on for a bit, and I was getting increasingly irritated because I wasn't enjoying the show at all; in fact the band was becoming secondary to trying not to get pushed over. After one apparently major dirty look, the girl says to me "why won't you let me move?". Right. Ummm, sweetheart, when there are people packed in like sardines we don't have much choice in "moving". Move up and down like everyone else in the first few rows. JFC one of my major pet hates are the entitled people of the world. Like I should let her move, regardless of the fact that I'm getting kicked and pushed and subjected to the rank odor of her and her boyfriend that I can still smell on my arm. Ugh. The thing that really got my blood boiling though was at one point she was behind me and actually pulled my hair. I'm not even kidding. My two-year-old niece pulls people's hair when she's angry at them. Good fucking lord.

Partway through the set they seemed to migrate away from me, so I was able to pay attention to the stage for a while. When Man Man played a semi-slow song, I actually thought the couple was going to chill out for a minute, but this is when they practically went down on each other right there next to me. Awesome. I thought they should do us all a favor and go have sex in the beemer or hummer or whatever car that one of their parents probably got them for their 21st birthday. Finally, at about 45 minutes into the set, we decided to head out. It was so disappointing... first to have to wait for-fucking-ever for the show to start, then to have assholes in much too close proximity. On top of everything else, and despite the fact it took the sound guy 45 minutes to get things right, the sound wasn't nearly as good as it was at Larimer Lounge. I think I wish to erase tonight from my mind and crawl back to the sweet memory of Man Man at Larimer Lounge - where I was in the front row having fun with people who were not hell bent on making things miserable for everyone around them.

Man Man were still awesome for sure, but I couldn't even pay attention tonight, which makes me very sad. I hope I get to see them again in a better place before they become too huge... Unfortunately (as of yet) there's no Colorado date on their tour with Modest Mouse. Sigh. But tomorrow - Stars Of Track & Field, The Broken West & The Long Winters at the Bluebird!! Ahhhh, the Bluebird - so familiar, so comfortable, so NOT Club 156.

revenge of the band nerds

What's that? You play the baritone sax in the marching band and think you can never be cool? Well, here's what you do - get a couple of friends: one drummer and one fellow multi-instrumentalist (preferably also a computer geek), and form a band. Name said band after a quasi-obscure Muppets reference (click that link, seriously), and there you go. Oh, I suppose it wouldn't hurt to also write great songs, have some seriously charismatic stage presence, and receive Pitchfork reviews of your first three albums = 8.7, 7.9 and 8.5, respectively. Yeah, couldn't hurt.

So I kind of crapped out on the Maria Taylor show at the Hi-Dive last night. It was flippin' cold and I was tired, and... well, I have no good excuse really. Which is not to say that it wasn't flippin' cold (and snowing!) tonight when I headed for the Hi-Dive and Menomena. But then again, Menomena has released an album this year that will almost certainly land in my top 20, and while Maria Taylor's new one (Lynn Teeter Flower) is nice, it's not nearly of the same caliber of Menomena's Friend And Foe.

As per usual, I missed the first band and got to the Hi-Dive about 10 minutes before Constellations took the stage. Upon arriving (and even moreso when I left at the end of the show) I was struck by the feeling that I was extraordinarily lucky this show didn't sell out (I neglected to take advantage of early sales...). The place was pretty packed. So I got me a PBR and made my way toward the front of the stage, where oddly there was plenty of room.

Constellations were good. Danceable, engaging, they made the time pass. Of course, after Menomena's set, it's a bit difficult to even recall the opener. Oh yeah, they were that good. I'd like to say that I'm at a loss for words about how fabulous the show was, but I'm really never at a loss for words. Menomena were phenomenal (hee hee); on top of what was a great show anyway, the fans were... well... just so fucking nice. If I could carry tonight's Menomena crowd with me to every show I ever attend, I'd be in heaven. I had a really sweet spot in the second row, between stage left and center. And still the guy in front of me asked me mid-show if I wanted to stand in front of him. I was floored, but as I was really happy with my view, I turned him down. The only thing that could have been mildly annoying were the repeated shouts for Justin to "take his pants off". Late in the set the woman right next to me mixed things up and yelled for him to take his shirt off. Without missing a beat, he retorted with "you take YOUR shirt off!". Touche. Awesome.

I was bummed to learn that this was Menomena's third time playing Denver... I only heard about them this year with their release of Friend And Foe. Though I'm not the only one it would seem - Justin made a point of mentioning that tonight wasn't at all like their previous visits and that they played to about a dozen people at Larimer Lounge last year.. Apparently I'm not the only Pitchfork whore in town... :)

Here's the set:

The Pelican
Weird
Wet And Rusting
Twenty Cell Revolt
Muscle'n Flo
Strongest Man In The World
My My
Boyscout'n
Cough Coughing
The Late Great Libido
Ghostship
Evil Bee
Rotten Hell
"this officially marks the most awkward "encore" performance in history"
Trigga Hiccups
The Monkey's Back

It's true, they played an encore. As encore as it can get at the Hi-Dive anyway (the only escape from the stage is directly into the audience). Tonight marks the first time EVER that I've seen someone play an encore at this club. Maybe because it's Saturday, maybe because the show was 21+, maybe because tomorrow (errrr, today I guess) is Easter and Jesus would have wanted Menomena to play an encore... Whatever the reason, it was really really great to get a couple extra songs out of these guys.

ok, i'm spoiled

Yup, Hi-Dive & Larimer Lounge, you have spoiled me. Tonight I realized the following:
  • I always forget how big the Gothic Theatre is - 800 capacity
  • The last time I was actually AT the Gothic was for Clap Your Hands Say Yeah almost 6 months ago, to the day
  • I so so so prefer venues like Hi-Dive and Larimer Lounge, which hold around 200 people, to the bigger theaters...

Why? Well, mostly because of my aversion to waiting. I hate getting to shows early and having to wait around. I can show up to the Hi-Dive and Larimer Lounge in the middle of the second opener and still get a spot right near the stage. But on nights like tonight, where I leave home at 9:00 for a sold out Neko Case show... Let's just say my evening didn't exactly get off to a banner start. Firstly, I didn't even want to go out. I'm tired. Tonight was #1 of a string of 5 shows in 6 days. And the ONE day I have off is Easter, which I get to spend with the family. I had to drive all the way to the Gothic in south Denver (I live in north Denver) and I just wasn't feeling up to being out late. My 2007 New Year's Resolution, though, is to NOT miss shows that I buy tickets for. So far I've only missed two - Sebadoh (in favor of some serious St. Patty's Day celebration) and Badly Drawn Boy (in favor of a serious St. Patty's Day hangover). On top of that, I missed out on Neko last summer because I was sick, so I was certainly determined to see her tonight.

I arrived at the theater for opener Jon Rauhouse's last song. I did want to see him, but hell I was already cranky, so whatever. I ventured down to the floor in front of the stage, but it was packed, so I decided on the balcony. On my way up the stairs, someone actually dropped a fucking drink over the edge, it landed on the stair right in front of me and splashed all over my clothes. Fabulous... not only was I already crabby, but now I had wet jeans and reeked of gin & tonic. It was about this point where I realized that I needed a drink. So I went to the balcony bar and was seemingly ignored for quite some time before I finally got a whiskey & ginger ale. And oh yeah, the guy outside the theater gave me a fucking "drinking age verified" wristband without even checking my id!!! Talk about making you feel old...

Well, finally. I managed to find a spot where I could see the stage and caught the last part of the overhead cartoon show that took place while the stage was being set up for Neko. Sadly, I missed most of it waiting at the bar, but I did manage to catch a couple of slides: "Hey dad, after we're done cleaning, let's make quiche!"; "Stanley spends Super Bowl Sunday sewing slacks"; "Stay tuned for Neko!". It was actually pretty cute. Unfortunately, Neko didn't even take the stage for another 15 minutes. I started kinda wishing that I HAD stayed home.

However, once Neko appeared, I realized that being in her presence, even at about 100 yards away, is still pretty fucking amazing, and the evening immediately improved with what developed into an incredible show. I came to the conclusion that I have a serious thing for red-headed women... between Neko & Jenny Lewis, I could damn will switch to the other team... :)

First, the setlist:

A Widow's Toast
Things That Scare Me
That Teenage Feeling
The Tigers Have Spoken
Lady Pilot
Maybe Sparrow
Dirty Knife
Tightly
If You Knew
Buckets Of Rain
Deep Red Bells
I Wish I Was The Moon
Set Out Running (oh I got chills at the end of this song, indeed)
Train From Kansas City
Hold On, Hold On
Star Witness
-encore-
Look For Me (I'll Be Around)
Favorite (I think my favorite Neko song. ever.)
Knock Loud
And I got my notes mixed up... at some point she played Margaret vs. Pauline, but I can't remember where... oops.

Lots of great Neko banter tonight... Before Tightly she stated that they don't normally do the song, but she was feeling sensitive today. "Hold me Denver!". At one point she asked if anyone had moved here recently and if so, did the altitude make you weepy? I'm a Denver native, and while it's widely known that the alititude makes it hard to breathe, I've never heard of it making people weepy. Apparently it does Neko, though... she also talked about watching the Aqua Teen Hunger Force earlier today and feeling bad that they are so mean to the milkshake. The milkshake that she has a crush on, by the way.

this is why i love steve finley

OK, so yeah this is really a music blog. But. I've got baseball fever lately, and I'm excited because one of my all-time favorite players is a Rockie this year. And I hope he stays that way. I fell in love with Steve Finley waaaaay back when he was playing for the Astros in the early 90's (one of my favorite teams before we got the Rockies). Why do I love Steve? Well...
  • bats AND throws lefty
  • center field gold glove winner: 1995; 1996; 1999; 2000; 2004
  • played for the D-Backs for some time - even though they're a Rockies division rival, I love the D-backs
  • in making the Rockies roster this year, Steve became the first player EVER to play for all teams in a 5-team division. and we all know how baseball LOVES these kind of stats....
  • 2-time all-star who doesn't ACT like an all-star. the guy seems genuinely down to earth and happy to play
  • he's pretty fucking cute:

Fuck you, Giants. Welcome home, Steve Finley.

blog name

Did you notice that I changed my blog name? Bridget's Blog has been way too boring for me for a looooong time, but sadly I'm not the most inventive person in the world. Then it dawned on me to actually name my blog after the onscreen "persona" I adopted years ago.

If you're one of the unfortunate people who have no idea what Mystik Spiral is, you can read all about it (them) here. I was a HUGE Daria fan back in the day, and I started using Mystik Spiral as my screen name some time ago. So there you go.

i'm glad you're happy

craig finn + baseball = heaven

Especially if you're a Twinkies fan...

Click here and ignore the commercial... holy crap, Craig's got a beard!

On a completely unrelated but equally awesome note, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah on Conan tonight!!!

gusterrhoids...

Gusterrhoids.... haha. One of the best terms ever created, presumably by Brian "Thundergod" Rosenworcel. Anyhoo, just a quick note that you can listen to Guster's Satellite EP in its entirety here. Once you give it a listen and fall head over heels in love with Brian's vocal stylings on Total Eclipse Of The Heart*, you can order it here.

*this alone is worth $8. Trust me, I speak from personal experience.

Guster is so great. Even if you don't appreciate their music, if you ever need a good laugh, visit Brian's road journal. Hours of hilarity - the kind of thing that can get you sanely through those boring hours at work. I have been maintaining for... wow, almost one year exactly, that this is the best road journal ever written. I tried to read it over the phone to my sister once and I coudn't do it because I was laughing so hard.

the best of 2007... part 1

I can't believe we're 3 months into the "new" year already. And even more, I can't believe the abundance of amazing stuff that the music gods have bestowed upon us in those 3 months. I thought I'd put together a little tracklist of some of the best new music that 2007 has given us so far... well, OK, maybe not so "little". It's about 90 minutes of pure awesomeness that goes something like this:
01 - The Apples In Stereo - Can You Feel It?
02 - Deerhoof - +81
03 - LCD Soundsystem - Someone Great
04 - The Broken West - Down In The Valley
05 - Apostle Of Hustle - Chances Are
06 - Of Montreal - A Sentence Of Sorts In Kongsvinger
07 - Menomena - Air Aid
08 - CYHSY - Mama, Won't You Keep Them Castles In The Air...
09 - Illinois - Nosebleed
10 - Modest Mouse - Spitting Venom
11 - The Arcade Fire - Keep The Car Running
12 - The Besnard Lakes - Devastation
13 - Panda Bear - Take Pills
14 - Beirut - Scenic World (Version)
15 - Andrew Bird - Dark Matter
16 - Jamie T - Calm Down Dearest
17 - Dr. Dog - Worst Trip
18 - The Shins - Girl Sailor
19 - Papercuts - Take The 227th Exit
20 - A Sunny Day In Glasgow - 5:15 Train
21 - Do Make Say Think - A Tender History In Rust
download it! (download will only be good for a couple of weeks... if you have trouble let me know).

And because I like lists (who doesn't?!?) here are the top 10 albums of my year so far... based almost solely on the amount of times I've listened to them (no ranking order here, rather alphabetical by album title):

The Besnard Lakes - Are The Dark Horse:
Canadian indie rock, I love you. Seeing these guys (and gal) live recently cemented this one in the first quarter's Top Ten.

Favorite tracks: Disaster; Devastation; Cedric's War

Andrew Bird - Armchair Apocrypha:
Andrew has achieved the impossible and topped The Mysterious Production Of Eggs. Beautiful album.

Favorite tracks: Fiery Crash; Plasticities; Dark Matter

Menomena - Friend And Foe:
Very original, very fresh sound from these crazy guys. Buy the CD, the artwork is insane.

Favorite tracks: Muscle'n Flo; Air Aid; Boyscoutin'

Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?:
If, or rather, when you buy this one, I highly recommend getting the vinyl version, as it includes 4 incredible bonus songs. Insound has it. You need it.

Favorite tracks: Heimdalsgate Like A Promethean Curse; A Sentence Of Sorts In Kongsvinger; The Past Is A Grotesque Animal; Du Og Meg (lp bonus track)

The Arcade Fire - Neon Bible:
Anthemic sophomore effort from yet another amazing Canadian band. I love love love this album.

Favorite tracks: Keep The Car Running; Intervention; (Antichrist Television Blues)

Jamie T - Panic Prevention:
I just can't get enough of this young Londoner's debut album. I'm not really sure why, but every time I listen to it I'm overcome with the feeling that this is the album the Arctic Monkeys should have made... Brilliant.

Favorite tracks: Calm Down Dearest; Back In The Game; Sheila; Dry Off Your Cheeks; Alicia Quays

Yeah, I love it.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Some Loud Thunder:
So far SLT wins the 2007 award for most polarizing album of the year. From what I've read and heard, people either love it or hate it. Fuck those haters, this album is a masterpiece.

Favorite tracks (if I have to pick just a few...): Some Loud Thunder*; Mama, Won't You Keep Them Castles In The Air And Burning?; Yankee Go Home; Underwater (You And Me); Five Easy Pieces (and, if you can get your hands on the bonus track The Sword Song, do it - it's beautiful)

*I chose the title track as a favorite because (a) I fucking love the song but perhaps even more because (b) it seems to be the most polarizing track on this already polarizing album. If I had a nickel for every time I heard/read someone ask "is is supposed to sound like that?"... well, I'd probably have enough nickels for a mortgage payment. I firmly believe that Alec Ounsworth doesn't do anything without oodles of forethought, and I most definitely count myself among his biggest fans. I admire CYHSY for making the music they want to make, and for not giving a shit about what people think of them. CYHSY is not for everyone, I know. But they should be. Think about it.

LCD Soundsystem - Sound Of Silver:
I've never been hugely into the whole electronica-dance-rock thing, but I love this album. A marvelous follow-up to the eponymous debut.

Favorite tracks: North American Scum; Someone Great; All My Friends; Watch The Tapes

Dr. Dog - We All Belong:
Hearing this album for the first time sent me into a Dr. Dog phase where I listened to nothing else for a few days. We All Belong is their best effort yet. Try it, you'll like it. Oh - and another amazing live band by the way.

Favorite tracks: Old News; My Old Ways; Ain't It Strange; Worst Trip

The Shins - Wincing The Night Away:
There are a couple of clunkers on here, but the indie pop brilliance of the rest of the album more than makes up for them. I don't care what anyone says, Wincing is just as good as Oh, Inverted World and Chutes Too Narrow. Fantastic.

Favorite tracks: Australia; Phantom Limb; Turn On Me; Girl Sailor

Some more albums that are certainly worth a listen:

can you feel it?

"We've been on tour for like 2 months... it's good to be home."

Tonight saw The Apples In Stereo at the Bluebird for a homecoming/last night of their tour. Having never seen them live before, I wasn't too sure what to expect. The keyboard player took the stage first, all decked out in a silver space suit, cape & light-up glasses. The entrance proved to be slightly on the anti-climatic side, however, as the rest of the band was dressed in more of a "rocker" fashion - polka dot shirts, sweater vests, torn jeans & t-shirts. AIS rocked waaay harder than I imagined, and they quickly won my heart - I'm a sucker for percussion. Not necessarily the drum kit; I'm talking percussion as in maracas, tambourines & cowbell - which AIS had in spades.

For 90 minutes we were treated to a band alternating between rocking out and gushing gratitude. It was obviously a special night (Robert had at least 2 brothers and his parents in attendance) and the Apples ended their tour in the grandest of fashions. I don't have any sort of a setlist, though I know they opened with Can You Feel It?. We did get one new (unrecorded as of yet) song - a "post-new-song" according to Robert, as many of the songs were from the new album. Yeah, that's all I've got. Every few numbers, guests would appear on stage - mainly, it would seem, members of the band Casper & The Cookies, who have been touring with AIS. Odd, because they didn't open this particular show... that honor went to local band Landlordland. So why was Athens' Casper & The Cookies present? Your guess is just as good as mine, but they were having as much fun as the rest of us.

The main set ended with no less then 15 people on stage - the 6 Apples In Stereo, Robert's brothers (I think), members of Casper, a woman with a pom pom who was invited up, and two guys from the front row who I suspect invited themselves up, haha. Almost immediately after everyone vacated the stage, the house lights came up... no encore?!? April Fool's, maybe, as the band came back after a moment to play a few more. The first encore song was instrumental, and the drummer gave a drumstick and the cowbell to a fan in the front row. Someone is going to be bragging at the water cooler tomorrow about playing cowbell with The Apples In Stereo... lol. They played a couple more and the encore ended with the dismantling of the drum kit, maracas a-flying and everyone present having a grand time.

EDIT: Ooooh, I've got a setlist now, because someone taped the show and I've downloaded it. So here ya go:
